Throughout the mid-’80s to ’90s, a time when thousands of Cubans fled the communist island nation in search of political freedom, Gustavo “Gus” Rodriguez stayed. Boldly standing for civil liberties, he worked as an independent journalist; but, this was illegal since independent news sources were prohibited.
As a result, Fidel Castro, the late dictator, exiled Gus. So in 2001, Gus and his family relocated to Fort Wayne, IN. In 2009, he and his wife, Yalili, opened the original Caliente on State Street, and in 2017, they opened a second location on Wayne Street.
At Caliente, each meal is made fresh, from scratch, with quality flavorful ingredients. Come visit the only authentic Cuban restaurant in Northeast Indiana, and try a traditional meal. You’re sure to feel like you’ve visited the sugar-white shores of Cuba!
